Poached Figs in Red Wine Syrup
This is an easy, quick to prepare dessert that does not require a lot of preparation. Use plump figs to receive maximum flavour.
Ingredients:
3 1/2 cups dry red wine (Zinfandel or Beaujolais)
3 whole dried star anise
zest of one orange, cut into strips
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 cinnamon stick
pinch of chili flakes
2 pounds dry figs
500 gram premium ice cream
biscotti
Method:
1. In a stainless steel pot, place the star anise, zest, sugar cinnamon stick and chili flakes. Bring to a simmer, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Add the figs and poach until they become plump and tender.
2. Pour the mixture through a sieve, setting aside the figs and seasonings. Place the wine liquid back in the pot and continue to simmer until it becomes thick and syrupy.
3. Divide the poached figs evenly between 6 bowls. Ladle the reduced syrup over top. Serve warm or at room temperature with ice cream and biscotti.
